If you've been arrested for a crime you didn't commit, you need to defend your legal rights. You have the right to an attorney who can help you present your case. After being wrongly accused of something myself, I learned quickly how to navigate the legal avenues to have my case dismissed. My attorney was a great resource for building the case, and because of my understanding of the law, it worked. I created this site to share what I learned along the way and some other great tips for others who have been wrongly accused and arrested for a crime.
If you find yourself in need of a lawyer, then you might be confused about exactly who you should hire. There are so many different types of lawyers that it's easy to be confused about which is which. To help you out, here's a brief rundown of some of the most common types of lawyers and exactly what they do:
Family Lawyer
These lawyers specialize in the specific field of law surrounding interactions between members of a family. If you are dealing with any legal topics surrounding marriage, child custody, child abuse, or paternity testing, then you should be looking into a family lawyer.
However, if you are specifically interested in estate planning (which is the creation and modification of documents that determine what will happen in the event of death or incapacitation) then you might need to see a more specialized lawyer. Some lawyers do deal in both family law and estate planning, but others do not.
Personal Injury Lawyer
If you are interesting in pursuing a personal injury lawsuit since you were injured in some way due to another person's negligence, then you might be interested in the services of a personal injury lawyer. Whether you have an individual lawsuit or want to participate in a class action lawsuit, these lawyers can help you win the compensation that you are owed.
Be aware that not all injuries can qualify for a personal injury lawsuit. The injury must not be due to your own negligent actions. For instance, you cannot expect to win a personal injury lawsuit if you slipped and fell at your job due to your own lack of awareness.
Bankruptcy Lawyer
If you are burdened by a crippling amount of personal debt or if your business is going under, then you will probably need to hire a bankruptcy lawyer. It is critical that you consult a lawyer if you intend to file for bankruptcy. They will be able to help you figure out what your next step is going to be and how to recover from your debt. While some bankruptcy cases do arise from unforeseen circumstances, many others can be traced back to poor financial habits and decisions.
Real Estate Lawyer
Whether you are planning on buying a house, selling a house, or renting a house, consulting a real estate lawyer is an excellent idea. You want to be sure that any mortgages or terms are well-conceived and in your best interests.
Some situations, like determining who will inherit your home if you die, are better handled by estate lawyers, which are an entirely separate category. If you have more questions, consider speaking with a representative from Vandeventer Black LLP.
